The Autumn Term
The Autumn term witnesses the beginning of the new
School Year. In the earlier part of term the theme
of the School Eucharist is the celebration of Michaelmas
the festival of the angels, (29 September). Soon afterwards
Thanksgiving for Harvest and a service takes place.
Both of these festivals remind us of God's creative
activity: his creation of spiritual beings before
and beyond the material universe; and the wonder of
the natural world, for whose fruits in agriculture,
fishing and industry, we give thanks at Harvest-time.
Later in the term November is the month of Remembrance.
All Saints Day (1 November) and All Souls Day (2 November)
bring to mind those who have gone before us in faith
and our departed loved ones for whose repose we pray.
This is the theme of the second School Eucharist of
the term. We also join the whole nation in paying
our respects and remembering those who have laid down
their lives in the cause of freedom, justice and peace.
As December comes, we enter the season of Advent
when we prepare for the birth of the Saviour, of necessity
anticipated in schools with Carol Services and Nativity
Plays and Christmas parties. There is a Christingle
Assembly and then St Nicholas School Carol Service
takes place in the Parish Church of St Andrew &
St George. This term always ends on a festive note
with great excitement as children wait for Christmas
actually to arrive!
The Spring Term
We celebrate the Epiphany at the beginning of term
and remember how the Wise Men, coming from afar, represent
all the peoples of the world: Jesus may be worshipped,
not only by his own people, but by anyone, irrespective
of race, nationality, even gender.
February brings the Christmas cycle to an end with
a Eucharist for Candlemas, the Presenting of Christ
in the Temple. We remember how he was proclaimed the
Light of all the peoples of the world.
During this term Lent begins. There is a long tradition
in this School of thinking of others in Lent and trying
to raise money to help. Many charities, particularly
those linked with the care of children, have been
helped with substantial donations raised by our Lent
activities over many years.
Towards the end of term there is a Eucharist and
Passion-tide act of worship when all reflect on our
Lord's offering of his life for us in Holy Week.
The Summer Term
The term begins with the joy of Easter, the Christian
festival of the Resurrection. Much of the first part
of the Summer term falls within Eastertide - a season
not just a day - including the Festival of the Ascension,
when our risen Lord returned heavenly glory, leading
up to Pentecost: the celebration of the coming of
the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. School worship
-Assemblies and the Eucharist - reflects the Eastertide
themes. The Easter-tide Eucharist is celebrated in
church rather than the School hall, if Ascension Day
falls in term-time. The later Eucharist of the term
comes around Peter-tide (St Peter & St Paul's
Day 29 June; St Thomas' Day 3 July). This gives a
opportunity to give thanks for the apostles, friends
of Jesus, and all our friends.
The term ends with a service in the Parish Church
to celebrate the whole School year, during which those
who are leaving come to the altar rails for a special
blessing and commemorative prayer card.
