Making a Difference Day

YOUNGSTERS SWAP THEIR CLASSROOM FOR THE COMMUNITY

STEVENAGE primary children are swapping their classroom for the community when they take part in a special ‘Making a Difference’ Day.

The youngsters, aged 5 to 11, from St Nicholas Primary School, decided they would like to give Stevenage residents a helping hand as part of their activities to mark Lent this year.

Nursery children have made pots with plants to give to the elderly, reception children are taking donations to the town’s charity shops and year one are visiting the Fred Millard Care Home, Cuttys Lane, to read books and play games with the residents.

During the day:

  • Year Two are sending toys to the children’s ward at the Lister Hospital
  • Year Three are presenting mugs for flower arrangements to an elderly group at the Friends Meeting House, Stevenage
  • Year Four are visiting the Stevenage Food Bank with their own donations
  • Year Five are presenting a cheque for £350 to the Special Baby Care Unit at the Lister Hospital. They raised the money by holding a Mothers’ Day stall
  • Year Six are bag packing at Asda, Stevenage.

Mrs Sarah Stevens, headteacher at St Nicholas Primary School, said: “Our children have planned a whole range of exciting activities to support different parts of the Stevenage community.

“At St Nicholas we believe that it is vital to teach children values such as generosity, kindness and charity. Projects like this are not only enjoyable, but they really do inspire children to make a difference to the lives of others.”
